mondel bread

my grandmother's recipe never included chocolate chips,

may your holiday be filled with sweetness

our younger daughter has crossed an ocean

early morning light

from the inside:
my daughter made this sculpture several years ago.
she does not love it, but i do.

from the outside:
the rising sun slants across the attic and
spills light through her sculpted doorway for only a moment each day.
this always makes me smile.

bless the carolers

the winter we moved into our first home in vermont,
carolers appeared on our doorstep a few nights before christmas.
imagine these strangers, braving the cold, bringing holiday cheer.
would any of you care to share your experience with carolers?

the last cauliflower

mr. brattcat brought in the last cauliflower.
it had snow on it.
brattcat steamed it in wine,
drizzled mustard/mayo sauce over it,
grated a cheddar cheese cap over its lovely head
and baked it until it was golden brown.
yummmmmmmmm.

this old house thursday: perhaps my favorite house in brattleboro

doesn't this place look as if some behemoth of a creature carried it across the ocean from england and dropped it here in vermont?

i'm on the road again for a few days but i've scheduled posts to appear during my absence.

on the back road to dummerston

this farm clings to the side of a hill,
its two horses gawping from a small field,
its two dogs grizzling in the dooryard

train geometry

when I was a child my brother's erector set was off limits.
the power grid of trains is off limits to me, too.
but i am drawn to these structures just as i was once drawn to my brother's skeletal constructions.

back side

this is what our town looks like from behind:
crotchety buildings hovering over railroad tracks
a drowsy river, and power line perches for pigeons.
