wouldn't it be glorious if snow really came down in colors?

but what's falling outside my window just now is all white.

david sanger spoke to a full house in brattleboro last week

during his informative talk not a single soul headed for the exit.
everyone listened with rapt attention
and later came a scintillating exchange of ideas

at a performance of ferdinand the bull at the new england youth theater

what was going on in the audience was as entrancing
as what was going on
on stage.

do you hear the thumping of boots?

on the front porch, before entering, knock off as much snow as possible.
then unwind the scarves, pull off the hats, unlace the boots, unzip the coats, pull on the slippers and pad into the kitchen to stir up some lovely hot coco.

ice fishing derby

beneath their feet the fish swam sluggishly.
the entire expanse of the meadows was peppered with people and fishing shacks.

yesterday afternoon i peeked in the window.
1,258 love letters by february 13th and people still writing. hooray for love!
happy valentine's day everyone.

past the ice pond and up to the cornfield

i trod softly in bear-paw tracks
and the sleek parallels of skis
but still i found myself sinking to my knees.

hiking without snow shoes

trying to walk on top of the trail left by others.
one step out of every four i went down to my knees.
hard work but sooooo beautiful.

after the storm

pathway brought to you by mr. brattcat.
hard to tell with the drifts but mr. bc calculates about 20 inches of fallen snow.
walking around town had to be done in the streets as most sidewalks were still impassable.
winds brutally cold for walking. brrrrrrrrr.

ice conclusion

this is my last image in the ice series, taken two days ago in quechee, vermont, a little over an hour north of brattleboro.
yesterday, all day and through the night, the snow fell.
i'll go out later and see what i can capture to share with you.
thank you all for your comments about the ice circles.
i love that i can photograph something that fascinates me and this community helps me to understand the true nature of what i've caught.

i asked mr. brattcat what causes the circles in the whetstone brook

he felt the manhole cover at the base of the lower falls (to the right of center) might be responsible.
is he right? any one else have an idea?

circles of ice

these perfect circles float down the whetstone brook
and gather like magic plates
waiting to feed the hungry connecticut river.

icebergs on the connecticut

not big enough to take the titanic down,
more like very cold pieces of ivory soap.

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

ice on the connecticut river begins to break up

you can hear the water muttering to itself under the february sun

Monday, February 4, 2013

ice, ice baby

these fishing shanties were standing on very thin ice this weekend

Sunday, February 3, 2013
