Ah, the hammer. Nice touch! I like this angle you've taken here.

I don't know which I enjoy more...the black walnuts or the apples. But, I know that I really, really like this photo. The smell wafting up the stairs from the kitchen reminds me that my baked apple (one every morning in winter) is ready and waiting!

A hammer to open walnuts....hmmmm...that would change the entire tone of the seasonal "Nutcracker" performances.

Cracking walnuts open with a hammer? I hope that you have a good rock or stone around and do not leave dents in the table.

That sounds good! I could do that. I'm a little afraid of the hammer though. It was hammered into my head early on that it could be dangerous to one's fingers to hammer walnuts.

Being a bit of a nut myself, I've tried hammering lots of nuts. Usually I miss and hit a digit attached to my body or a table (which usually leaves a dent), or I hit the nut squarely and it ends up with all the meat and shell smushed together in a gooey mess.

Perhaps I could join you and you could, ah... give me instructions. Or, better yet, I could just eat the walnuts. Oh, and I'd prefer coffee to tea.

Would that be OK?

Heh, heh, heh!

Walnuts and apples. That does sound fun, festive and a bit wintry.

How does Brat crack those hard shells? Now, Bratcat, that's worth a special post!!

Beautiful photograph and the black walnuts comment is making me want to bake something.

Ah, lovely! No leftovers for and apple and walnut crumble? What are black walnuts though?

Yes, you really know how to enjoy life!

Lovely light you have captured here, BC. Adds depth to the cane of the basket.

I like the thought of cracking open black walnuts with hammers. As a child, after our main Christmas meal, my brothers and I would sit on the kitchen steps and crack open nuts from our papier mache "Santa coming down a chimney". One of us used the nutcracker, another a hammer and the third had to resort to a brick.

I love the blue wall behind them! That sounds like a wonderful snack... and may inspire my afternoon tea today. Were they Washington apples?

I see you've been fumigating...

Apples + sunshine = a peaceful kitchen. Very sweet, BC, very sweet.

The sunlight on the apples is lovely and warm!

Sounds very wholesome. You could blend it all with some rum. How about a bottle of Bacardi sticking out of that basket with the fruit?
