I'd guess a nail rusted through or and the sign pointed down. Or, I would think there was a big-assed hill just ahead and I would feel like I was driving on a roller coaster.
By the way....
Yep, I felt really bad yesterday. Was sick at my stomach and went to doctor. Think I got sick on a dish my wife made that must have been soaked in garlic. I no longer like chicken or pork sliced into thin pieces and mixed up with and is called garlic chicken. So this was done when I felt lousy.
Like, downward? Maybe I'd quickly look up for a falling meteorite. For similar sign confusion, see http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobcrowe/2979543974/in/set-72157608332799905/ .

I would lie down.
Perhaps look for a tunnel? Look for an underground alien base? :)

Oft times I see similar signs here and the down-pointing version is trying to indicate behind me. 2D signs in a 3D world are a challenge.
You had to ask, didn't you? Sheesh. What a downer! ;-)
Brava. Amazing.
I will dig, too.

With one like this I would look around and if your the only one there pray it's not your turn. :-)
Ha! I'd laugh.
A marvelous, uplifting find.
Going the other way...could be a downer.
What a very interesting place and photo!
I would turn around and go home!
