New Year's Day is an appropriate time to take down the tree. It signals the end of the holiday season, and it is a holiday that gives time to put everything away.
Unless one celebrates the holiday according to the Orthodox calendar, then there is another 10 days or so before Christmas.
As soon as holidays are over..As I begin to decorate for Xmas at the beginning of november, when the celebrations are over, I want to change everything rather soon.ANd I need at least a week to go back to normality, working hard everyday! :)
Traditionally the tree is disrobed on the 6th Jan, that is the twelfth day of Christmas. In European tradition the tree is trimmed on Christmas eve and in Europe and England as well, it is unlucky to leave it up beyond the 6th.Jan.
We left it a few days later because my in laws were coming from Canada to escape the cold and had our house burn down on the 23rd.Feb. Now I certainly don't tamper with tradition.
My favorite topic! Following the customs we grew up with, the tree does not go up until Christmas eve and remains up through the Epiphany on Janurary 6. For the last few years I have extended this period for as long as the needles do not fall off. Winter is long and dark in the north and we need as much light as possible to keep our spirits up -- and the Christmas tree is a great way to do this!
I generally put my tree up in mid December and take it down on January 6th. However, in my neighborhood, many seem to put up trees and decorations right after Thanksgiving. As early as December 26th you start to see discarded trees out with the trash.
It looks like many who have responded know of or follow the January 6th tradition. I do as well. We, too, used to trim the tree on Christmas eve after the kids fell asleep. Made for a long night. Sacrilege, I know, but now we have an artificial table top tree that is removed to the attic, still decorated, til the next season. I think I would even skip that if it weren't for the grandkids. But then I think of all the lovely ornaments boxed in the attic, probably never to see the light of day again! The tree in the photo is lovely and could be admired for a long time.
Last year - it was up until the middle of January. No one wanted to put it away. It just because the ugly ignored thing that sat in the living room. So, I got mad at it, and jammed it up in the attic. That's why no tree this year, it couldn't take the beating.
One year, it was up until April. I was protesting being the only one who ever put it away. No one seemed to care then, either.
We leave it up through the 12th day of Christmas (Epiphany). I do not like to take it down. Each ornament signifies something special in our lives, given or chosen for an occasion appropriate at the time it was hung. I remember and reflect on all those things as I take out ornaments and then carefully pack them away.
I have a neighbor that is still lighting up the neighborhood just like the movie Chevy Chase was in. I do know that they have 3 or 4 trees inside so I'm figuring they are up too.
They light up the front yard for Halloween, Christmas, the 4th and Easter. Power company loves them.
I"m superstitious. I get my undecorated before New Year's Day. Well I got that done but the stupid thing is still hanging around the living room, bare naked and awaiting my friend who will haul it to the basement for me.!

NYD, although this year we had a beautiful tree that just kept sucking water, and we got lazy. It lasted one more week. I'm sorry. Don't hurt me!
Oh, almost forgot. Growing up at school, the nuns always told us that the tree could remain til Little Christmas, January 6.

Sometime in January; though I leave the lights on the large house plants throughout the winter. The lights make me smile.
Lois Anne is in charge of our Christmas tree. It comes down on New Year's day! I supervise.
being that it is January 16th I would say that this one is up TOO LONG! lol
