This Old Jail House

in the 1800s this building housed Newfane's jail and its hotel,
the hotel occupied one side, the jail the other.
prisoners received the same food as hotel guests.
some people went out of their way to get locked up.

Was the sheriff also the director of the hotel?..That way, he was sure to have clients on both sides of the building!Ü

Funny! Nice looking building with a great history.

I think there are some people today who would prefer being locked up than on the street.

Kind of like "upstairs" "downstairs".

Unfortunately the elements are conspiring against us, Brattcat. We won't be wandering to Brattleboro this Sunday. We appreciate your generous offer to show us around town . . . it would be fun to meet a fellow CDP blogger some day. -slim

Hi Rob, the building houses the sheriff's department now. No more hotel.
