father time sits quietly on a bench

feeling blissfully grateful

for one week i'm doing things i've never done before

to celebrate my birthday...

yesterday we hiked to the top of w. rattlesnake mountain in rumney, n.h. to get this view.

a toast to you

for being such dear friends

i share this birthday with leonard bernstein and charlie parker,

peter jennings and richard attenborough,

dinah washington, robin leach, elliot gould,

and sunny of barnyards and barnacles

to name a few.

summer murmurs drowsily to itself

it lays its green cheek down to rest awhile

ferns reveal their delicate personalities slowly and subtly.

to know them requires patience and careful observation.

short cut home

these steps are part of a serpentine path.

it took me years to find them.

but now i follow them home when i'm not up for a heart bangingly steep climb

three candidates for state senate debated at the american legion hall

an audience eager for information listened attentively and respectfully

(in this row alone two knitters never missed a stitch)

stone bridge revisited

hidden from the road

these steps lead to another time

when i first posted an image of this stone bridge on april 3, 2009,

these wonderful, unexpected, and quite informative comments appeared on my blog.

Isn't this bridge part of the Retreat trails system? I believe Retreat patients built the stone tower, higher up, stone steps where needed, and several of these stone landscape features.

Cold Spring (1845)
This spring is located just west of Upper Dummerston Road where it joins Route 30. A source of pure water, it was the destination of daily walks by patrons of Dr. Wesselhoeft's Hydropathic Institution, located in Brattleboro. In 1899 the Retreat built a stone hood over the spring and a rustic bridge of boulders over the ravine. It became a favorite resting place for Retreat patients on their daily walks.
