my daughter used to hold her breath when she passed a cemetery,

fearful she would breathe in a wandering spirit

the water ran off the roof of the gray barn,

leaping onto a snowbank with glee.

126 miles, 12 days,

in the grip of winter,

for a 38 year old problem-prone nuclear power plant.

certainly not the most beautiful, definitely not the most commented on,

but i photographed this smoke tree over and over

trying to capture its enchantment.

to my unskilled eye, this shot came closest.

this old house thursday: where my daughters were born

we no longer live here,

but this house survived, among many things, the hurricane of '38 (just barely),

some live-in goats and a few chickens (the family before ours),

dogs and cats (ours), a river rat (ugh...no pet, that),

and the births of our two daughters.

simply succulent

i don't know how in january

tomatoes from maine can

smell and taste and look this good

but i am profoundly grateful for this red reality
