not to get sticky stainy goo on it.

I had never heard of or seen a knitted egg before. This looks like it would bring a sense of satisfaction and completion faster than knitting socks, mittens or scarves.
We are SO on the same page on this one. It all goes back to my black licorice fetish, I think.
