hans christian andersen's mother was also a washerwoman...
but i don't think she ever looked this cheerful

Museums give us glimpses into life, both past and present. Perhaps the painter took a few liberties by making her "cheerful" about her daily tasks.

I am not that cheerful doing the laundry, and all we have to do is throw the clothes in the washing machine instead of using a washboard.

Who knows?While she was doing this, she was at home,not outside in the cold, not obliged to care about cattle or about something much harder..Maybe it's only a matter of relativity..
