taking a break from work in the hardware store

rob makes a cell phone call in the front window display

you are all so clever...yesterday's photograph was a luscious piece of brown silk velvet,
as flowing as water, as soft as talcum powder
seen at our equally luscious fabric store, delectable mountain.

i'm still way under the weather, just popping up long enough to post.
may this flu never cross your doorsteps.

would anyone care to venture a guess

at what this might be?

(a clue...i saw it on main street)

not only have gremlins taken root in my computer,

now they've taken root in me.

(i'd like to bid a particularly warm--rather fevered--welcome to new followers: Greko Virtual, mingrange, Raquel Crusoe, and Leena, my 250th. thank you!)

putney road market

where owners lew and roberta talk as knowingly about opera and literature
as they do about roast turkey and whoopie pies.

impervious to cold,

this boy on a skateboard zipped down the middle of linden street
passing women in wooly hats and puffy coats

mother nature's late winter libation

on the rocks.

(taken two days ago, already melted)

making tracks

we flee from winter

but we've yet to find the path to spring.

sorry, jack.

Thursday, March 24, 2011

there was an old birdie who lived in a boot

with doormats of snow and laces of jute.

(taken at the sunflower house on chapin street, brattleboro)

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

contemplating snow storms in march,

gremlins in computers,
the kindness of strangers,
the frailty of life.

the tech guy says, "huh...i've never seen a computer do that before."
so it's still not fixed.
but fixed enough to come limping onto your dashboards this morning.

if we had a window into each individual life,

the tragedy of what has happened in japan, and its consequent ripple effect,
would be, if possible, even more devastating

to all those living in, or with connections to this beautiful country and its precious people,
please know we are holding you in our spirits and in our hearts.

brattcat's brattcat watches vigilantly for the gremlin

unfortunately the gremlin continues to toy with us,
popping its head up from time to time just when we think all is well again.

i will try to visit you all soon.

Friday, March 11, 2011

uh oh gremlin alert

my computer is ailing.
off to the shop for an indefinite period of time.
be back in touch when i reconnect.
be well, all of you!

restless fingers of ice

have plucked the slate right off our roof.

(photo taken by mr. brattcat
who was standing,
at the time,
on a very tall ladder)

back to reality?

this morning i woke to a frosted fantasy.
ah vermont.
elsewhere in the state people are digging out from 30 inches of snow.
down here in brattleboro we had a deluge of rain and then this icing on the cake.

our last glorious day in seattle

we spent
with kim of seattle daily photo
kim gave us the "ten cent tour"
which was nothing short of
priceless.

thank you so much, kim, for your gracious hospitality.
spending time with you was every bit as delicious as i'd hoped.

at the seattle science center

we walked amid the butterflies.
when the time came to leave them
we spun around three times to make certain none had hitched a ride

(welcome new followers happy-hapsi, artedigit, and alexa.
i'm so glad you alighted on my blog.)

Sunday, March 6, 2011

one morning we toured the seattle public library.

from a mezzanine, we hovered over a reading room.

the children's room beamed in the basement,

where fearless max ruled over the wild things.

we rode the yellow escalator.

and lost ourselves in the red hallway
which i knew i had to see
because of kim's (seattle daily photo) images of this mysterious passage.

what a library!

on the bus to tacoma dome

we passed safeco field.

eighty minutes later, in olympia, we ate baked potato soup and chocolate cake, sipped coffee and cocoa,
walked along the sound, ate a fabulous meal at the oyster house,

and met henry the bookstore cat.

what a perfect day.
thank you dear, dear jill and don!

with a theme of "once upon a time," gardens at the northwest flower show were inspired by

the three little pigs

wind in the willows

alice in wonderland

and stowaway,
to name a few

from our room in the vintage park hotel

a view of the magnificent seattle public library

from coast to coast

sunset in philly
snow in seattle

(got back 2am this morning...thank you for all of your kind comments.
please indulge me in some travel photos this week.)

theme day: my favorite part of town

how can i choose?
i love every square inch of it.
this was taken during the first blush of fall...it still looks quite white right now
