Post-concert blues

From morning to night
Arturo practiced his fingers to the bone.
His performance on Saturday met with howling success
but he felt rather dead by evening's end.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

high anxiety in pumpkintown

it was only a half-baked story told to him once by his daft Aunt Muffin
and yet young Gordon couldn't shake his feeling of dread

monochrome monday: light's out

i've never seen it lit and yet
it still thrills me with a sense of homecoming

as for yesterday, give a cigar to Sunny, Steve, Kaori, Jacob, and Dave. the answer was Cadillac.
Frank, you get every other cigar remaining in the box. though you never actually answered the question.

sky watch friday: river garden

the paramount theater once stood on this site.
i saw King of Hearts here, twice.
when the theater burned down
the town visionaries decided to make an indoor park out of the space.
it's often entirely naked beneath the glass roof.
you can take shelter here from the rain,
watch the snow fall,
walk to the back and gaze at the lazy river.
there is no river inside the 'river garden'
there is no garden inside the 'river garden'
but any given day will find a dozen or so people in there,
reading, playing chess, dancing the wild fandango.

this old house Thursday: on north street

i went out yesterday
in the late afternoon.
the wind made a blizzard of maple-leaf snowflakes,
the rain nibbled the air with its little sleet teeth.

autumn lullaby

if you sit quietly
you can hear the trees humming softy to the grass, to the air,
to the darting birds in their sun-dappled feathers

afterimage

these brittle branches won't survive the vermont winter.
fragile limbs stretch across the strange autumn sky, savoring the bittersweet taste of their last season.
they are like the afterimage of lightning.

still hildene

robert todd lincoln pasted artwork from storybooks on these screens.
when his grandchildren wanted a particular story, they would point to one of the pictures,
demand, 'this one!'
and their grandfather would oblige by telling them the requested tale.

Theme Day: Contrast...divine light in a dour city

a handful of locals sat on lawn chairs
silent, awed by the glimpse of something
bigger even than their big apple,
glimpsed between towering giants.
