because it's so hot

i've moved my computer from the sweltering attic to the first floor.
because i attended an exuberant production of godspell last night
i couldn't settle down to sleep.
because i couldn't sleep i went downstairs to work on my computer at 4 a.m.
because it's summer and we live in a drafty old house,
a weary bat took a wrong turn and found its way in but couldn't find its way back out again.
flap, flap, flap, went the frantic bat, all around the room.
poor bat. poor brattcat.
we'll both be napping through another hot day.

The arch and stones look almost monastic. Beautiful!

I've had a few bat encounters here and abroad and none of them were enjoyable.

What a great story, demonstrating reality is as wild as fiction. Hope you are not too batty Brattcat by the end of the day. Nap well :^)

BC, you must come over here. You could put the heating on...

Have good naps!

Sounds like it was quite a night in the old Bat Cave, I mean the Brattcat Cave. I hope you have cooling
winds to ease your nap today.

Yikes! We had that happen in an old office building I worked in years ago (the windows actually opened). Everybody flipped out.

Just looked at the national weather map. Pretty bad everywhere east of the Rockies. I thought it would be cool when I get to Maine in two weeks but maybe not.

Well, the bricks do look cool We let the bats too from time to time. I attack them w a tennis racket. LOVE! I also have a bathouse out back that only gets bees in the summer. Fancy that.

Wishing you a quiet a cool day! Is this arch part of the old house? How beautiful!!!

the arch is not part of the house, melissa. it is the portico of a church on main street in brattleboro and i thought that dense growth of green looked a lot like the thickness i'm feeling in my sleep-deprived head today.

Fantastic photo. Sorry about the night visitor. I hope he found his way out (with a little help possibly) and you can take a nap.

Ewwwww. I sympathize. No indoor bats here, but I didn't sleep at all last night - finally got up at 3:30 and started the day. Yawny yawn.

Exactly, I second what Ciel said Brattcat, have a trip to Perth and you'll be lovely and cool!! What a wonderfully romantic image you have here to describe your night time adventures, archways and ivy are a wonderful mix.

Drat, said the bat
When swooping
Around
His ol' friend
Known to
Her friends
As Brattcat.

For he saw
Right away
She was
Too hot and
Too tired
To play
So while
He clang
To a wall
He figured a way
To bring her some
Cool relief.

I know what I'll do
Said the bat
To himself
I'll fly by and
Flutter my wings
And then when
She screams
I'll use ev'ry means
To get the
Hell outta there
Fast!

funny, funny lowell. let it be stated for the record that i did NOT scream nor run nor act in any semblance girly. i simply put my computer down and hastened back up stairs, shutting all the door behind me. thank you for your comical poem. even if i didn't scream i can see why you thought i might.

I loved this sequence of events! I only hope the bat was able to make its way outdoors alive and well.

I just put some ice on my laptop, and it isn't too hot here...

A hot and drafty old house? With bats? Take your nap in a hammock strung between two trees.

That bat thing happened to me once too when I was spending some time at my cousins farm up north. Kind of creepy! :-) Wonderful shot.

I lived in Brattleboro when I was a kid and also in Putney. We had an old Colonial home in Putney and the bats would get up in the attick. The stairs to the attic were accessible through my bedroom and I'd fall asleep to the sound of flitting bat wings in the attic, eek!!!
