at the billings farm

this path divided the oxen from the cows and horses.
do you suppose this would have been as peaceable a kingdom without the fences?

A kind of no man's land between two worlds.. Did you feel like a UNO peacekeeper while walking there? ..:o)

If there was no fence... beware the cow patties and other assorted 'gifts of nature'.

Maybe the oxen and the cows do not get along because the oxen are resentful of the fact that they have to work harder.

It might work out surprisingly well, even cats and dogs can sometimes be the best of friends. Beautiful rural image Brattcat, enjoy your long weekend.

This is really pretty. Your viewers should enlarge the picture to appreciate it better. I always heard that cows and horses don't like each other, but I am a city boy. What do I know?

Love that country lane!

Indeed, the enlarged picture looks with much detail and beauty. The scene is of hard work or/and peaceful and bucolic!

Cows and horses seem to get along just fine. They lack some human "qualities" that lead to fractious behavior that is often dangerous. Why that is so, I dunno.

I like the photo very much!

Ah, fences; the possibility of contentious thoughts, ala Frost in "Mending Wall"--my mind jumps from thought to thought. When the Berlin Wall came down, I read that poem in an all school assembly.

Probably not. Thus the fence ws constructed. Isn't there a saying about fences making good neighbors?

This fence reminds me of mammy's farm in Brazil. It was used only to protect the animals from the road nearby.
This picture is adorable, a scenery of Jane Austen novels. :)
Cute!

I wonder who are the troublemakers - the oxen or the cows & horses? :)
